More about the Library:
The Library Of Africa and The African Diaspora (LOATAD) is a decolonised library, archive, writing residency, and museum in Accra, Ghana, dedicated to the work of African and Diaspora writers from the late 19th-century to the present day. Founded in 2017 by British-Ghanaian writer, Sylvia Arthur, with 1,300 of her own books, LOATAD's expansive collection features +/- 4000 books by, and ephemera from, writers from 41 of Africa’s 54 countries and Black authors from the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe, and beyond.
LOATAD's outreach and in-reach work with children from underserved communities is an integral part of the library's existence. It provides a vital link between improved literacy and improved life chances for under-schooled young people. With three school libraries in communities across Ghana, LOATAD hosts creative writing sessions, theatre workshops, and storytimes using African literature as the main stimulus. The aim is to shift perceptions of Africa in young people by embedding a sense of literary and intellectual pride from an early age through a range of exciting, culturally-relevant programmes.
