Applied Theatre Playshops

Mary uses Applied Theatre as a way to support Black, Indigenous, People of Color to build connection through play to share, heal, and listen together.

Being in a room full of intelligent older (than me) and wiser black women who taught me more about how awesome it is to be a black woman truly made me feel loved in my own skin.

Breathing Room: A Series

BR Series Flyer.jpg

As Black Women theatre artists and applied theatre practitioners, we believe in centering the voices and stories of Black people in spaces that are by us and for us. At "Breathing Room: A Series," Black people will connect through the healing power of theatre and creativity. We will facilitate games and activities that integrate elements of Playback Theatre, Theatre of the Oppressed, and poetry.

Each gathering is grounded in a central theme that invites Black people to play, breathe, share, and listen together.

The Breathing Room: An Affinity Group for Black Womxn

PRJS_Sisi_Lalenja.png

The Breathing Room Affinity Group is a space created by black womxn for black womxn to breathe, heal, create, & affirm. Using Theater of the Oppressed & Playback Theater skills we will counter the harm that the session facilitators have experienced in white-led spaces, & together we will affirm one another’s experiences, perspectives, concerns, and observations. This space will foster community & heal during the summit & beyond, as members return to the exhausting work of dismantling, resisting, & activating in their communities.
